Research and Experiment Week 2015
Lessons can be completely different sometimes. This was the experience of 18 students from the science and technology track of the 8th grade who applied to take part in the experimental science days in Berchtesgaden.
Amelie Wirth, one of the participants, remarked: “We covered topics that we would never hear about at school. We got to conduct many exciting experiments ourselves.” For example, the students used molecular biology methods to investigate which types of meat from which animals the butcher had processed into sausage. How can a self-built and self-programmed robot navigate through a winding corridor? But the highlight for everyone was clearly the construction and launch of a homemade rocket, which reached a height of 200 meters and returned safely to the ground with a parachute—completely undamaged.
The supporting program for the week of experiments also had a lot to offer. Students visited the “Haus der Berge” museum and the nearby salt mine. A boat trip on the Königssee—including the famous trumpet echo—was also part of the experience.
A large portion of the costs for the experimental science days was covered by the Frank Hirschvogel Foundation.
