STEM Field Trip 2017

Two 8th-grade classes from Pfaffenwinkel Realschule Schongau spent a week at the Bauersberg youth hostel on a STEM-themed educational retreat under the motto “Active Exploration.”
With energy and curiosity, students conducted hands-on experiments and closely examined natural phenomena from their everyday surroundings. One highlight: creating their own pocket warmers—a fun and useful way to apply their chemistry and physics knowledge, which came in handy during hikes in the chilly Rhön region.

Biology was equally exciting: equipped with rubber boots, students tested stream water quality by identifying aquatic organisms as bioindicators. They also analyzed water samples using photometric techniques. A central aim of the week was to inspire interest in future science-related careers. Working in small groups, students presented their findings, strengthening their communication skills and self-confidence.
Embracing the guiding principle “We shape the environment consciously and sustainably,” the students also explored renewable energy through practical experiments.

A large portion of the program’s costs was generously covered by the Frank Hirschvogel Foundation.
