Project description

Once a year in November, eight schools in Eisenach and Bad Salzungen take part in the demanding Mathematics Olympiad. All pupils in grades 5 - 12 are eligible to take part.

At two different exam locations, the pupils work for up to 6 hours on four mathematically challenging tasks, which are prepared by members of the Mathematics Olympiad Association (Verein Mathematik-Olympiaden e. V.) throughout Germany. The correction of the work is carried out centrally by approx. 30 teachers from all regions. At the end of the objection period, the best student achievements of each class level are honored with prize money during a central award ceremony.

The Frank Hirschvogel Foundation is pleased to be presenting the awards for the best pupils as of this year.

Field reports

2020
The Thuringian Mathematics Olympiad celebrated its 60th anniversary this year. Although it was not possible to hold any grand celebrations due to the coronavirus pandemic, the mathematics event itself fortunately still took place, albeit under different conditions. A high school in Eisenach – Elisabeth-Gymnasium – achieved the greatest team success, winning five of the eight class levels. The successful students were awarded cash prizes from the Frank Hirschvogel Foundation

2019
On the second Wednesday in November, ambitious schools from all over Germany sent their math aces to the regional contest (2nd round) of the Mathematics Olympiad. During what was the 59th Olympiad competition, 117 participants from 7 high schools in Eisenach and the Wartburg District battled for the best solutions to challenging mathematical problems.

In addition, the math Olympians were, of course, also fighting for qualification into the 3rd round, the Thuringian state competition on February 22, 2020 in Erfurt. Supplied with sandwiches, grapes and cold drinks, the students wrestled for a total of six hours and right up to the last minute with the math questions, trying to find the most ingenious and elegant solutions.

At the award ceremony in the cafeteria of the time-honored Martin Luther high school (Martin-Luther-Gymnasium), 26 prizes were finally presented, coincidentally to 13 girls and 13 boys. What could not be known at the time was that eight of these students had also qualified for the state round thanks to their particularly strong performances.
The most successful school this time was Elisabeth-Gymnasium (EG), which won three gold, three silver and three bronze awards. Next came Martin-Luther-Gymnasium (MLG) with three gold and three bronze awards.

The determination with which these mathematically talented students compete for success impressively demonstrates just how highly they and their teachers regard the Olympiad. The intensive training in creative problem solving provided by the Mathematics Olympiad is certainly a decisive factor in the funding eligibility of this regional lighthouse project.
