Project description

Today, it is no longer enough to simply convey teaching content in a theoretical way. The curriculum is increasingly demanding the expansion of social and personal skills – things which can often only be learned in practical situations. For this reason, practical projects are essential for schools.

Company tours or co-operations thus provide the ideal opportunity and environment to convey these competencies. The pupils learn how to apply theoretical knowledge and feel motivated to use and expand on this for their future professional life. Furthermore, they can discuss the relevant topic with experts.

Project details

Topic: Practical projects

Age category: From 6 years

Venue: e.g. Hirschvogel Automotive Group / Training Center

Duration: 1-5 days

Participation requirements: Maximum of 30 school students

Project funding

The Frank Hirschvogel Foundation gladly supports practical projects which have a concrete reference to the teaching content of the curriculum. The Foundation generates the contacts to companies or other institutions and finances the travel costs to the excursion destinations or to the relevant training center.

Field reports

2018
Students of the biology-chemistry internship course at Dominikus Zimmermann High School (Dominikus-Zimmermann-Gymnasium) view the scanning electron microscope at Hirschvogel in Denklingen.

On June 6, 2018, students of the biology-chemistry internship course at Dominikus Zimmermann High School visited the Hirschvogel plant in Denklingen to gain an insight into scanning electron microscopy.

Dr. Schuster informed the pupils about the basics of electron microscopy and then showed fascinating images of a bee, a brass chip and a grasshopper. The Zeiss SEM, which is used by Hirschvogel to analyze materials, can also determine which types of atoms are present by X-ray analysis.

Deeply impressed and enriched by the wealth of insights we had received, we made our way through the storm outside and returned to school. Many thanks to Dr. Schuster as well as to the Hirschvogel Foundation, which assumed the travel costs that enabled us to see the scanning electron microscope at the plant.

2017
On Tuesday, November 14, 12 pupils from the 12th grade at a high school in Kaufbeuren (Jakob-Brucker-Gymnasium) with an interest in physics had the opportunity to travel with our teachers Mr. Schwarzenbach, Mr. Bosky and Mr. Liebau to the company Hirschvogel in Denklingen.
HAt Hirschvogel, Dr. Schuster explained how various electron microscopes work in theory. Here, many of the principles we had covered in our school lessons were covered. After that, he showed us the practical application using an in-house scanning electron microscope. Besides analyzing a razor blade, we also took a closer look at the surface of a medal from our school. This allowed us to see even the smallest of scratches and areas of unevenness on the surface which, to the naked eye, appears completely smooth. In addition, we checked the gold content of two wedding rings – one belonging to Mr. Liebau, the other to Mr. Schwarzenbach. The goldsmiths were obviously honest, as both rings did in actual fact have the stated gold content.
We would like to once again thank the company Hirschvogel and the Frank Hirschvogel Foundation for making this interesting excursion possible. (Jakob Neumaier, 12th grade)

2016
A “planetary path” is special type of trail along which a scaled-down model of the solar system is represented.
In 2016, the 11th grade physics P-seminar* at a high school in Landsberg (Ignaz-Kögler-Gymnasium) planned the construction of planetary path in Landsberg am Lech. The implementation of the path was carried out in collaboration with the Training Center at the Hirschvogel Automotive Group in Denklingen under the supervision of Peter Geier. In this way, the pupils were able to gain valuable practical experience and were really impressed by the implementation process.

[*P-seminar =a seminar for providing guidance on the choice of university studies or career. The seminar takes place in the senior year of a certain type of high school (Gymnasium) in the state of Bavaria and involves working on a project for 12 months together with external partners]
