Project description

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research regularly initiates mobile educational activities to strengthen the application of teaching content at schools by means of practical projects.

Two examples of such mobile educational initiatives are the “Solarakademie” and the “BioTechnikum”:
The “SOLARAKADEMIE ON TOUR” is a real eye-catcher in 2015. The converted coach from the company Recon GmbH shows high school students the world of renewable energies from a different perspective. In the “rolling classroom” they can carry out experiments that support the content of the school curriculum. Answers to questions such as “How does a heat pump work” or “Driving with hydrogen – how is that possible?” are provided in the mobile classroom.

The “BIOTechnikum: Research Experience – Health, Nutrition, Environment” is an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research which presents in a clearly structured way the current state-of-the-art in the area of biotechnology. The exhibition vehicle, which has been traveling across Germany since 2008, provides insights into the subject and gives pupils the chance to speak with experts. School students who visit the BIOTechnikum can experience biotechnology in a hands-on way and slip into the role of researchers. Besides this, they can also gain an overview of the diverse training and career paths in this area.

Field reports

2017
From December 5-7, 2017, the BIOTechnikum initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research took up the invitation of the Frank Hirschvogel Foundation and presented an interactive exhibition on biotechnology in the school yard of Dominikus Zimmermann high school and at the Johann-Winklhofer high school in Landsberg. In the laboratory of the double-decker exhibition vehicle, the registered school classes were able to carry out practical experiments and to talk with the scientists on board about career perspectives.
Furthermore, the mobile BIOTechnikum exhibition offered pupils the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in their biology and chemistry lessons in a practical way. For example, they were able to familiarize themselves with fundamental biotechnical methods with the aid of professional laboratory equipment.
The colorful program was filled with workshops covering topics such as “The Little Cheese Laboratory”, “Experiments with DNA” or “Tracking Down the Virus”. The students had a lot of fun carrying out the practical experiments and were impressed by what they experienced.

2015
In June the SOLAK solar bus once again made a stop at a high school in Eisenach (Ernst-Abbe-Gymnasium). The 6th grade students from the school had the chance to carry out experiments there for a whole day.
The solar bus is a solar academy on wheels and offers school students the opportunity to conduct experiments relating to various topics. The lotus effect and aerodynamics were particularly in demand this year, and the pupils carried out everything on their own – from the preparing the experiments through to carrying them out.
