MISTI exchange program

Project description

For the second time, a student from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in Boston, USA, visited a high school for girls (Mariengymnasium) in Kaufbeuren and taught in various classes for three weeks.

Although she mainly taught the higher grades, who were better able to follow the lessons held in English, she also visited pupils in the 8th and 9th grades and taught them about atomic theory and atom models.

And the university student even went to the 5th grade classes and explained specialist terms relating to the musculoskeletal system and blood circulation in English. The girls at the school were bursting with pride when they could say what the joints, muscle fibers and connective tissues are called in English.

Both the pupils and the teachers found the exchange with MIT Boston a highly enriching experience. Particularly in the fields of biology and chemistry, English is now an absolute must and has almost become the “native language of scientists”. Furthermore, it is of enormous profit to the school to be provided with information about another country at first hand. The change of President in the US led to many interesting discussions about American politics.

For Julia Cha it was a good opportunity to find out more about the school system in Germany as well as the customs and culture in Bavaria. The MIT student visibly enjoyed teaching and was thus able to return to Boston with many insights and new experiences.

The costs for the exchange were assumed by The Frank Hirschvogel Foundation.
