Project Description

Students from Ernst Abbe High School get a Taste of University Life.

On June 6, the 9th grade students of the elective subject “Science and Technology” at Ernst Abbe High School (Ernst-Abbe-Gymnasium) enjoyed a different type of lesson. Instead of going to school, they spent a day experimenting in the laboratories and in the School Research Center of Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences. There, the school pupils were able to complete two workshops headed by university students. Following a brief, informative tour of the campus, the research activities could begin.

At the School Research Center, the boys and girls tried out their design skills using a PC program. With the aid of a technical drawing, all of them succeeded in this task. The result was a chess rook keyring. A sample keyring was then produced on the 3D printer and was presented to the pupils as a souvenir.

In the metrology laboratory, the students set up an electronic circuit for distance measurement using photo resistors. The required program was written on the PC and transferred to a mini-computer. Those who had done everything correctly could observe that the audio frequency changed when the distance changed. After a few attempts, all the pupils managed the task successfully.

Of course, no taster day at university would be complete without lunch in the university cafeteria.
We have had contact to Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences in this area for some years now. Special thanks go to Ms. Corinna Endter, who always organizes an appealing program for our students. We would also like to thank the Frank Hirschvogel Foundation, which provided considerable support to our project by funding the travel costs.

Our pupils will be given the chance to enjoy a taste of university life next year, too!
