Project Description

For the 9th-graders of the elective course “Science and Technology” at our high school in Eisenach (Ernst-Abbe-Gymnasium), a different form of teaching – learning in a different place – was on the agenda on June 6. The students were allowed to work in the School Research Center at Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences. There, they took part in two workshops, led by university students and research associates. Following a brief presentation held by Ms. Endter, where we learned about the university as well as the study programs, and had the chance to see the largest lecture hall at the campus, the pupils were then allowed to immerse themselves in the scientific working atmosphere.

In the 3D printing lab, the girls and boys learned about how a product is developed from the idea to the print. This required precise work when measuring the objects as well as creativity when developing a box for the components. The pupils did a great job. A sample copy was then printed on the 3D printer, which we were allowed to take away with us.

In the metrology lab, our pupils assembled the electronic parts that were to be built into the printed box and, with the support of Mr. Menz (Head of the School Research Center), installed the software they had previously developed together. The result was an ARD news ticker that works via WLAN.

The contact to Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences has existed in this area for several years now. Special thanks go to Ms. Corinna Endter, who always organizes an appealing program for our learners.

We would also like to thank the Frank Hirschvogel Foundation, which supported our project significantly by covering the travel costs.
