After a break due to COVID-19, wind instrument lessons resumed in spring 2022. On April 8, second-graders took part in a trial day where they had the chance to try out various instruments and meet their future teachers.
In preparation for the Bavarian Wind Class Competition, students from Denklingen and Fuchstal came together on May 7 for an intensive rehearsal weekend. Since the group from Denklingen was too small to compete on its own, they teamed up with the Fuchstal class—and together, they won first place in their age category.
Students who chose to continue learning their instruments were invited to join the Fuchstal Junior Orchestra, which held its introductory rehearsal on July 12.
The school year concluded with a joint concert featuring the wind class and school choir, along with musical contributions to the graduation ceremony at Fuchstal Middle School.
Brass and Band Class

Project Description
Not every family can afford private music lessons or the purchase of an instrument.
However, research clearly shows that early musical education has a positive impact on a child’s cognitive development
and learning skills.
Since 2012, the Frank Hirschvogel Foundation has supported early musical education in schools by funding instrument
leasing, trips to performances, and targeted musical training, such as the annual music week at the Marktoberdorf
Music Academy.
Cultural education remains a key pillar of the foundation’s support initiatives.

Testimonials
As part of the extended music program at Pfaffenwinkel Realschule Schongau, 28 students in the band class learn to play a band instrument over the course of two school years.
Each week, students participate in three music sessions: one focused on music theory, one on band rehearsal, and one on individual instrumental instruction. Through a mix of group playing and focused practice, they develop both musical understanding and hands-on skills on their instruments.
Thanks to the support of the Frank Hirschvogel Foundation and other partners, families do not bear any costs for lessons or instruments.
Since 2015, Denklingen Elementary School has expanded its musical education program with the support of the Frank Hirschvogel Foundation. The school’s wind class begins in third grade and runs for two years, giving all students the opportunity to play instruments together as a group.
Instruments are provided free of charge, and lessons are led by trained music instructors. Many students go on to pursue music in secondary schools or local music clubs.
The program’s success was clearly demonstrated when the wind class performed at the foundation’s 10th anniversary celebration, impressing the audience and highlighting the impact of this initiative.
The band class project was launched in the 2016/17 school year at Pfaffenwinkel Realschule Schongau. Thanks to the generous support of the Frank Hirschvogel Foundation and other contributors, 28 students received instruments—including guitars, keyboards, basses, drums, and percussion.
The program was very well received, leading to the creation of a second band class the following year, which once again required additional instruments—made possible through continued support from the foundation.
Beyond musical education, the project strengthens social skills and helps eliminate financial barriers for participating families. Demand remains high, and a new fifth-grade band class is set to begin in September.
