The Class Representative Seminar at Jakob-Brucker-Gymnasium is a cherished annual tradition.
Participants include the current student council members, class representatives from grade 7 and up, and the leadership teams of various student groups such as the Environmental Club, the Fruit Club, the Event Planning Committee (AKV), as well as former student representatives from the previous year. The seminar is always held shortly before the autumn break with the goal of collaboratively planning the school year ahead.
Upon arrival at the youth hostel in Memhölz on Wednesday afternoon, all participants—accompanied by two liaison teachers—checked into their rooms and went over general rules of conduct. After a shared dinner, everyone gathered in the seminar room, where they got to know each other through a series of icebreaker games. The rough schedule for the coming two days was also presented, and the evening ended in a relaxed, informal setting.
The following morning began with breakfast, followed by the first agenda item. Here, class representatives presented concerns and suggestions brought forward by their classmates, covering both positive feedback and areas for improvement in everyday school life. The student council recorded these inputs and organized them into thematic categories such as cafeteria, teaching staff, or facility services.
Next, the student council introduced several working groups planned for the school year, including “School Apparel,” “Upper School,” “Public Relations,” and “Everyday School Life.” All participants were invited to join one of the groups and, with only a break for lunch, spent the day developing ideas and goals they would like to implement during the year. Each group also created a poster to present their vision and role within the school. These posters were later displayed in the school building to inform the wider school community about this year’s initiatives.
In the late afternoon, each working group presented their ideas to the full assembly. Together, participants discussed the feasibility of each proposal. Highlights included the idea of organizing a secondhand sale of older school apparel, design concepts for the new upper school common room, and strategies for raising awareness of the student council's work within the school community. In addition, cover designs for next year’s student planner were presented. The group selected five finalists, which would later be shown to the entire student body for a school-wide vote. To wrap up the day, a group photo was taken to commemorate the seminar.
After dinner, students had free time to socialize and unwind.
On the final day, Principal Mr. Walter and Mr. Dössinger from the school administration joined the group at 10:00 a.m. to review and discuss the proposed ideas. Together, they explored which projects could be implemented within the legal and organizational framework of the school. The discussion proved to be both productive and encouraging, with broad agreement on many points and a shared sense of optimism for the coming school year.
