“Let nature be nature” – This motto of the Hainich National Park accompanied the fifth-grade students during their final week of school as they took part in project days in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. As a partner forest school, the Hainich National Park plays a special role for our grammar school, and these project days are held every year for the fifth-grade classes. They offer students the opportunity to experience the motto “let nature be nature” with all their senses in the Hainich forest.
A hike from Craula to the treetop walkway allowed the students not only to discover numerous plant and animal species using magnifying jars and identification cards but also to marvel at fossils. Of course, one entire day was dedicated to exploring the treetop walkway and the root cave.
On the third day, students immersed themselves in the world of wildcats by following the Wildcat Discovery Trail and visiting the Wildcat Village in the National Park. The feeding session of the wildcats was a particular highlight, as students were able to observe the animals up close — an impressive experience for all.
Throughout all three days, games centered on animal life in the Hainich forest helped lighten the learning atmosphere and kept the students motivated and engaged.
