Project description

The School Laboratory of Kempten University of Applied Sciences opened its doors in July 2015 to school classes from the 9th grade up. The focus of the Laboratory is on human sensory perception, i.e. the senses which we use to perceive ourselves and the world around us. Students can discover this topic in the School Laboratory by means of clearly structured and astonishing experiments.

For a few hours, the girls and boys can slip into the role of a scientist or an engineer. Exciting experiments playfully convey modern insights from the world of physics, physiology and psychology. Furthermore, the school students can find out about the research and teaching that takes place at Kempten University of Applied Sciences.

The experiments in the basic program deal with seeing and hearing. Here, young people learn how the eye forms an image, how difficult it is to draw a triangle and to learn when wearing reverse image glasses, as well as how and why optical illusions deceive us.

Fascinating color effects are seen by the students when they look at the pixels of their smartphones under the microscope, or when they produce colors themselves through the additive mixture of light or when they generate colorful shadows.

By determining their own auditory threshold curves, the students get to know the limits of their personal hearing ability. At other acoustic stations, they break up their voice into frequency ranges and analyze the spectrum of the harmonic oscillations.

As a project such as the School Laboratory is not foreseen in the budget of the university and is based on the personal initiative of a highly committed professor, external financial support was necessary. The Frank Hirschvogel Foundation is supporting the project for a duration of four years.

The support of projects such as the School Laboratory, which generates synergies between schools and universities, is of great importance to the Foundation in compensating for the locational disadvantage of its partner schools.

Topic: An experience for all your senses

Age category: 9-11 years (special tour for elementary schools upon request)

Venue: Fischerösch 4, 87435 Kempten (Allgäu), only 200 meters from the university campus and almost 10 minutes walking distance from Kempten central station

Duration: 2,5 hours (9th, 10th Grade)

Extended program: 3,5 hours (from 11th Grade)

Participation requirements: Maximum of 36 school students

Project funding

In the area of educational funding, the Frank Hirschvogel Foundation bundles its support measures at a regional level. We thus welcome inquiries from teachers or schools from the regions of Eisenach, Kaufbeuren, Landsberg and Schongau.

Projects from the area of science and research on the topics of environmental protection, social issues, ecology, technology and the economy are welcome from all Bavarian and German universities and institutes.

2017
Pupils taking robotics as an elective subject at a high school in Buchloe (Realschule Buchloe) visited the School Laboratory of Kempten University of Applied Sciences. With great curiosity and enthusiasm they worked at the various stations on the topics of hearing and seeing. Lively discussions took place on possible solutions and results. All of the participants were visibly enjoying themselves and were able to apply and deepen the knowledge from their physics lessons in a practical way.


Höhepunkt der Exkursion war der Besuch des Kuka-Labors der Hochschule Kempten. Dort bekamen die Schüler von Herrn Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jacob eine kurze Einführung in die Geschichte und die Entwicklung der Robotik. Besonders beeindruckt waren alle von dem humanoiden Roboter „Nao“ und von einem Roboter, der eine Kaffeemaschine bedienen konnte.

Die Frank Hirschvogel Stiftung übernahm die Fahrtkosten für die Schülerinnen und Schüler.

2016
Students from a high school in Landsberg (Dominikus-Zimmermann-Gymnasium) in Landsberg visited the School Laboratory in Kempten on March 17, 2016. As part of the the W-seminar* on bats and within the framework of the biophysics course, the 30 students enjoyed a special program put together by Professor Eimüller especially for senior classes. The emphasis of the program is on the area of acoustics and wave physics, as both of the school courses were dealing with this topic. The visit was a complete success for both classes. The travel costs were assumed by the Frank Hirschvogel Foundation.

[*A W-seminar is a seminar which students of the 11th and 12th grade have to take at certain high schools (Gymnasium) in the state of Bavaria. The seminar focuses on a certain subject area (e.g. physics) and deals with a specific topic defined in advance (e.g. the physics of flying)].
